Farmers across the US are worried that President-elect Trump's policies on immigration will lead to a shortage of workers on farms.

Farmers in the United States are voicing concerns about President-elect Donald Trump 's promise to deport millions of non-citizens, fearing a shortage of labor on farms. Joe Del Bosque, a 75-year-old Californian farmer, worries that the country may not realize the need for these workers until it's too late. He and other farmers rely heavily on undocumented workers to harvest crops and maintain their operations.

Economists agree that a mass expulsion of undocumented workers could lead to food shortages and skyrocketing prices. Rick Naerebout, executive director of the Idaho Dairy Producers Association, warns that dairy farms could be devastated by a sudden loss of skilled laborers. A survey by the Department of Labor found that 44 percent of the 2.4 million people working in farming in the United States are undocumented. University of Michigan economist David Ortega points out that while some politicians may publicly disagree, there is a widespread acknowledgment that the agricultural system depends heavily on these workers.
