US declares monkeypox a public health emergency, a move expected to free up more funding to fight the disease that has infected more than 6,600 people, around a quarter of them from New York state
Announcement frees federal funding and resources to fight virus, which may cause fever, body aches, chills, fatigue and pimple-like bumps on many parts of body.
"We're prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously and to take responsibility to help us tackle this virus," Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra said in a call on Thursday. Experts believe the real number could be much higher in the current outbreak since the symptoms can be subtle, including single lesions.
The declaration comes as the the Biden administration has faced criticism over the pace of vaccine availability for monkeypox.
