The United States , Australia , Japan and the Philippines will hold joint naval and air drills in the disputed South China Sea on Sunday, their defence chiefs said in a statement, as they deepen ties to counter China’s growing assertiveness in the region.
They said it would demonstrate the allies’ “collective commitment to strengthen regional and international cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.” The exercise and summit follow repeated confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels near disputed reefs off the Southeast Asian country in recent months.
“Our operations together support peace and stability at the heart of our shared vision for a free and open region.”
