University of Houston football position analysis: Linebackers
Senior Malik Robinson started the first two games at weakside linebacker butwith a torn pectoral muscle. He did not go through spring workouts and durability is a concern.
Jamal Morris filled in when Robinson was hurt — his 413 snaps were the second-most among linebackers — and Trimarcus Cheeks made five starts. Sophomore Treylin Payne played in 12 games as a true freshman and may be the best of the group, but he did not go through spring workouts. Hasaan Hypolite, a two-time team captain, has made the switch to linebacker from safety, where he played 30 games the last three seasons. The change is similar to the move made by Deontay Anderson prior to the 2021 season. It’s uncertain how Hypolite will fit into UH’s plans, but there is a scenario where the Cougars could use three linebackers when facing Big 12 teams that use 12-personnel .
