Part of the javelin had to be cut off before Elija Godwin could be taken to the hospital.
CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMOREA University of Georgia sprinter was hospitalized Tuesday when he was accidentally impaled by a javelin during a running drill.
University police say Elija Godwin, 19, was running backward on the infield when he backed into a javelin that was sticking out of the ground. The javelin entered his body just below his shoulder blade, police say. Part of it had to be cut off before Godwin could be taken to the hospital, where doctors were able to surgically remove the rest of the javelin from his body.
Godwin's mother, Ginger Luby, told police her son — a freshman at the school — suffered a punctured and collapsed lung, but is expected to make a full recovery.
