The University of Wyoming welcomes back eight black football players after a racist episode 50 years ago led to their being dismissed from the team.
In this Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019 photo shows part of an alleyway mural in downtown Laramie, Wyo., that honors the Black 14. The Black 14 were black athletes dismissed from the University of Wyoming football team in 1969 for seeking to protest racism by wearing black armbands in a game against Brigham Young University. The university plans to dedicate a plaque honoring the group at War Memorial Stadium on Friday.
More recently, former San Francisco Giants quarterback Colin Kaepernick accused the NFL of blackballing him for kneeling during the national anthem before games to protest police violence against African Americans. The football players wanted to protest racism some of them experienced in previous games against BYU and how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints then barred African Americans from the priesthood. Eaton would have none of the idea — and was backed up by the university’s board of trustees and Gov. Stan Hathaway.
Lionel Grimes said the episode repeatedly came up during job interviews, and he wondered how many job opportunities he missed because of it. The anger has taken years to overcome, he said.
