THE number of unemployed Filipinos decreased in May this year with more returning to work as the country continues to reopen its economy amid the pandemic, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported on Thursday.In a briefing, National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa revealed that preliminary Labor Force Survey data showed the country's unemployment rate in May was estimated to be 6.0 percent.This compares to 7.7 percent recorded in May 2021.

3 percentage point month-on-month increase from 5.7 percent in April 2022.The number of unemployed in May decreased to 2.93 million from 3.74 million in the same period last year. In April 2022, the number of unemployed was reported at 2.76 million.Mapa said that while the labor force participation rate increased to 64.0 percent from 63.4 percent in April, not all were able to land jobs, which led to a higher unemployment rate. The LFPR in May this year was lower than the 64.
