distribution of prey species within their ecosystems. They primarily feed on a variety of marine mammals and large fish species like tuna and other sharks.Artificial reefs have long been recognized as essential tools in marine resource management, typically created and used to bolster the productivity of commercial and recreational fisheries. These submerged structures attract marine life, creating habitats that mimic natural reefs.

Since 2015, a comprehensive acoustic tagging program has been underway to monitor the movements of these predators in Australian waters. Concurrently, monitoring efforts, including the deployment of acoustic listening stations, were initiated at seven artificial reefs along the coast. This unique setup provided researchers with an unprecedented opportunity to observe and analyze interactions between the iconic sharks and artificial reefs.

Artificial reefs are continuing to gain popularity worldwide, with various objectives depending on the project, ranging from habitat restoration to enhancing fisheries productivity. While these structures offer benefits in terms of marine biodiversity and ecosystem services, their potential impacts on sensitive species, conservationists argue, cannot be overlooked. Studies like this one provide valuable empirical data to inform evidence-based decision-making in marine resource management.
