An African graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says that shortly after the election of President Donald Trump, a white fraternity member told her that “my president says it is okay to kick out the n-----s.”

While their comments were given in defense of UNC’s admissions policies, they make clear how difficult it is to be a minority on campus — and what they say is an urgent need to admit more non-white students. Flores recalled a discussion in a freshman English course about "Silent Sam," the statue built to honor Confederate soldiers that has long been a source of tension on campus. There were no black students in class, so she felt “like I had to speak up for a community I did not belong to,” she said.

“She used Mexico and Canada as a way to represent it,” Flores said. “She described the good organisms as Canadian immigrants; they come into the US and then just leave. However the bad organism invades the cell and hurts it without ever leaving the cell. She compared this organism to Mexican immigrants.”Their statements describe public battles that have gripped campus and captured national attention in recent months. The students blast what they see as inaction on the part of the administration.
