Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi says he misspoke after saying the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi was a “mistake”

By Sarah E. Needleman Nov. 11, 2019 1:51 pm ET Uber Technologies Inc. UBER 0.57% Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said he regretted calling the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi a “mistake” in a recent video interview, opening a new front of controversy for the ride-hailing giant as it looks to rebound from a difficult initial public offering and regulatory scrutiny of its contractor-reliant business.

About an hour after the interview aired, the CEO called the Axios journalist who questioned him, Dan Primack, saying he misspoke and followed up with a written retraction, according to tweets from both men. Uber didn’t provide additional comment about the matter beyond Mr. Khosrowshashi’s apology. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

It has also faced scrutiny over its business practices, including its reliance on drivers as independent contractors, as well as safety issues related to its self-driving unit.
