'Every time I went out, I felt amazing. I felt powerful, like I was in control. The miles weren’t easy for a long time, but by the time I got to my first 5K, I was excited.'
My grandpa was the coolest person. He was a uniquely gifted storyteller and always seemed to be doing something interesting: motorcycling, camping, hiking, running. He didn’t care what people thought of him. If he ran a 50-miler, it was simply something he did because he decided to out of the blue. That “effortless” adventure is what made me aspire to be like him. Now, I know it wasn’t truly “effortless.” I saw his running log; he put in some serious miles.
Yet, every time I went out, I felt amazing. I felt powerful, like I was in control. The miles weren’t easy for a long time, but by the time I got to my first 5K, I was excited. The real change came when I counted calories using an app. Initially, I ate around 1,500 calories a day, but over time, I paid closer attention to my macros instead of only calories, and tried to eat to fuel my body and my efforts. However, it is something I still struggle with.
