For the first time in 12 years, the United States set a record for total trade, total exports, total imports and total deficit all in one year, with imports from China topping $500 billion for the first time despite the U.S. trade war with that country.
In 2018, the trade records came tumbling down, including the highest-ever imports from China, though President Trump's trade war did seem to put a damper on U.S. exports to China.
U.S. exports totaled $1.66 billion while imports topped $2.54 billion, both surpassing records set in 2014. Also worth noting: For the second straight year, the United States imported $500 billion in merchandise from China. The record that looked like it would tumble but didn't was the record for the most trade between two countries. U.S.-China trade in 2018 totaled $659.84 billion, $2.26 billion shy of the 2014 U.S.-Canada record. The difference? U.S. exports to China fell $4.46 billion in December alone, a 32.7% decrease.
