The U.S. and Taliban 'have negotiated a proposal' for a seven-day reduction in violence, Defense Secretary Mark Esper says
“It is our view that seven days for now is sufficient, but in all things, our approach to this process will be conditions-based … so it will be a continual evaluative process as we go forward — if we go forward,” Esper told reporters.
He declined to give further details, saying that allies are still considering the proposal. He also would not say whether the U.S. will continue to conduct counterterrorism operations during the seven-day reduction in violence, but said he hoped to have more details soon. “The best if not only solution going forward is a political agreement. We have a basis for one on the table,” he said. “Peace deserves a chance, but it will demand that all parties comply with their obligations if we move forward.”
The proposal could signal a possible breakthrough in the latest round of peace talks with the group that began last month and could lead to a longer formal peace agreement if all goes well during the temporary break in combat.
