Sen. Jacky Rosen is pushing for schools who get federal funding for computer science programs to disclose the number of students who participate, as well as their gender, race and other demographic info

Advocates for closing the gender gap in computer science say part of the solution isn’t necessarily increasing the number of classes that K-12 schools offer — it’s getting districts to report who’s taking them.

Rosen’s forthcoming bill will also call for the reported demographic breakdown to include ethnicity, English learner status, eligibility for free and reduced lunch, special education status and grade level. Several states have passed legislation requiring K-12 schools to track and report some of this data already, according to Rosen’s office.

Not surprisingly, fewer than 1 in 5 computer science graduates are women and only 24 percent of computer scientists in 2017 were women, according to Girls Who Code. Along with tracking data on computer science participation, the group recommends policies that increase girls' exposure to women and other underrepresented minorities in tech, funding gender inclusion training for teachers and expanding computer science courses to all middle schools to expose girls to the program at younger ages.

Roller said she is also watching the bipartisan Teacher Education for Computer Science Act that would establish “Centers of Excellence” for teacher education programs in computer science. Given that the teaching profession is predominantly made up of women, training more teachers would automatically increase female role models for girls in tech, Roller said.
