GAME STORY: Ty Blach is officially listed as a reliever, but the Rockies' left-hander delivered a desperately needed five-inning gem Sunday afternoon at Coors Field.
The Regis Jesuit graduate led Colorado to a 2-0 victory over Oakland, stopping a four-game losing streak and preventing the lowly A’s from a three-game sweep on the Rockies’ home turf.
On Saturday, when asked how long Blach would pitch as the “opener” of a bullpen game, manager Bud Black joked, “I don’t mean this to be sarcastic, but if Ty goes nine, that would be awesome.”He gave up just three hits — all singles — walked one and struck out two. The lefty has pitched 11 consecutive scoreless innings , dating back to his April 23 game at Philadelphia before he was sent down to Triple-A Albuquerque.
In the fifth, Ezequiel Tovar ripped Medina for a two-out double to right-center and scored on McMahon’s opposite-field double to put Colorado ahead, 2-0. Rockies lefty Brent Suter wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Ramon Laureano reached on an infield single, Tyler Soderstrom hit a two-out single to left and Aledmys drew a walk. Suter, the crafty veteran, struck out Nick Allen on an 0-2, 73 mph curveball. Allen was upset, and rightfully so, because Suter’s pitch was clearly out of the strike zone. Nonetheless, Suter kept Oakland off the board.
Daniel Bard, coming off his meltdown in a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday, survived a scary eighth. He walked leadoff hitter Tony Kemp — never advisable — and then struck out Zack Gelof looking. But Brent Rooker drove the ball to deep left-center where Nolan Jones hauled the ball in with his back against the wall.
