Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez said dispatchers received a 911 call about 3:50 p.m. from an unknown person seeking help. "We're still trying to determine if it was from someone inside the car," Rodriguez said."We're assuming it was from inside one of the cars."After receiving the 911 call, Uvalde police alerted the Border Patrol. When the train stopped 2 to 3 miles east of Knippa at the Yucca Sites station, federal agents searched the cars and found the migrants, Rodriguez said.
Five to six medical helicopters transported some of the injured to hospitals in San Antonio, the chief said. Others were transported by ambulance. Rodriguez said that Union Pacific Railroad police went to the scene, and that the Texas Department of Public Safety was conducting a joint investigation with that agency and the Border Patrol.
