Two brothers accused of San Diego-based illegal fishing operation [Breaking]
Two brothers are being sued by the San Diego City Attorney’s Office over allegations that they bought and sold fish for local restaurants without having the proper commercial fishing licenses.
If found liable in San Diego Superior Court, the brothers would have to end their illegal fishing business and pay financial penalties, authorities said.“Illegal fishing operations endanger our marine ecosystems and threaten our fish populations,” City Attorney Mara Elliott said. “The illegal acts also undercut licensed sellers who play by the rules. This action sends a strong message that we’re committed to protecting our oceans and businesses that follow the law.
Tanner Whitmarsh is accused of catching grouper, bass and parrotfish in Mexico that he then sold to a La Mesa sushi restaurant without filing the proper paperwork, the City Attorney’s Office said. The City Attorney’s Office said Trevor Whitmarsh had operated a commercial fisherman business between 2021 and 2022 without having a city business tax certificate.
