Turkey will continue to support the political process in Libya both on the ground and at the negotiating table, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets with Libya's UN-recognised Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj in Berlin, Germany, January 19, 2020.

"We see what kind of games are being played under the guise of fighting terrorism [in Libya]," he added.Touching on the peacebuilding process in northern Syria, he said, "If we realise our own plans and projects in the region between Ras al Ayn and Tal Abyad, these areas will become cities of peace."

On January 12, the conflict parties announced a ceasefire in response to a joint call by the Turkish and Russian leaders. But talks last week for a permanent ceasefire deal ended without an agreement after Haftar left Moscow without signing the deal. Tripoli-based Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj told Reuters he rejects Haftar's demands to link a reopening of oil ports to a new distribution of oil revenues among Libyans, saying such income was in any case meant to benefit the entire country.
