Bird numbers are up as the Rio Grande turkey season opens Saturday, but a winter drought could delay nesting behavior and leave the gobblers distracted by hens. “We need some rain in Texas for sure. Not only just to get the breeding season kicked off and going, and get those hens in good physical condition, but to get them away from the gobblers,” he said. “If they’d go sit on a nest, those gobblers would be more ready to come to the hunters.” “We’re pretty fortunate in Texas we have a pretty low harvest rate, so we have a lot of carryover. One of the primary mortality factors for adult gobblers is hunters. With the low harvest rate, we have a lot of old birds across the state,” Hardin said.
In the meantime, another productive nesting season in 2021 has put a lot of jakes on the ground for this spring. Early in the hunting season, jakes can provide good opportunity while waiting for the gobblers to heat up. Jakes also make ideal harvests for first-time hunters. This season marks the first for mandatory harvest reporting for 10 Texas counties that have one-gobbler bag limits.
