Across this eight-year-long journey, she noticed that Africans outside of her homeland wore traditional attire where a Western wardrobe was favored in South Africa. In Ghana she observed Asante women piling on gold jewelry like royalty. In Senegal and Mali, she saw young girls use sharp porcupine quills to part their hair into intricate cornrow designs. It’s how she developed her trademark center-parted braids.
Contemporary versions of the skirt are sewn from heavy, gathered fabric, but Madjozi still prefers the fluffy, woolen xibelani that was popular in the ’90s. To push boundaries further, she wears the modest silhouette above the knee with Nikes Air Max sneakers and an equally vibrant pair of pom-pom earrings. “There are traditionalists who would say the way I wear it is wrong,” she says. Though, as she points out, research for her upcoming documentary on the xibelani’s background proves otherwise.
