Trump spy chief John Ratcliffe, ex-Texas rep., shunned effort to overturn election
Aide to Trump’s chief of staff said the president lunged at a Secret Service agent when refused a ride to the Capitol.
“He was hoping that we would concede,” she told the House Jan. 6 committee. “He felt that there could be dangerous repercussions in terms of precedent set for elections, for our democracy.” “Director Ratcliffe didn’t want much to do with the post-election period,” Hutchinson testified. “John Ratcliffe felt that it wasn’t something that the White House should be pursuing. He felt it was dangerous for the president’s legacy. He had expressed that he was concerned that it could spiral out of control and potentially be dangerous ... for our democracy.”
Moments earlier, Trump had told the throng on the Ellipse that he would join them at the Capitol as they fought to block Congress affirming President Joe Biden’s victory.House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called Hutchinson, furious, she testified. Top White House aides had assured him they’d tamped down the president’s desire to go to the Capitol — a move that would surely have escalated tensions.
