From usatodayopinion: I wish I could say I was shocked to hear Trump rally attendees shout 'send her back.' But in North Carolina, this kind of hate is nothing new.

I saw the KKK burn crosses in North Carolina. 'Send her back' chants can't shock me now.HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — In the summer of 1976, I first drove through the town of Smithfield, North Carolina. I was 19 and had just finished my sophomore year in college.

For those unfamiliar with the highways and byways of North Carolina, Smithfield is but 70 miles from Greenville, North Carolina, the site of President Donald Trump’s rally where chants of “send her back” echoed last week. More than 40 years later, the refrain really hasn’t changed. Substitute “socialism” for “communism” and"immigration" for"integration."Like many other white people coming of age in the 1970s, I had heard terrifying stories of the Ku Klux Klan’s violence.

In a few short weeks, having paid my weekly rent on time, the talkative landlord began to confide in me. Not quite mano a mano. More like blanco a blanco.Among the revelations: His membership in the local KKK chapter. Soon enough, he invited me to a Klan gathering, again my white skin appeared to tell my story. By then 21 years old, I was less naive than when I first encountered the Klan billboard in Smithfield. A foolhardy young man, I agreed to go along.

The law was mean-spirited and fear-based — and some of the surrounding rhetoric reminded me of what I had witnessed decades before. Shock? If only. The year before, in 2015, my adopted home town of Hillsborough struggled with and finally decided to remove the words “Confederate Memorial” from the local history museum. That action spurred a backlash as hundreds descended on our town in a protest. Along with them: Confederate flags, kids in “rebel” caps and parents in Stars and Bars T-shirts.
