The president accused Beto O’Rourke of pandering to Hispanic voters and politicizing the shooting to his advantage
Trump’s Tuesday-night tweet escalates the tension between him and El Paso officials, many of whom have discouraged his visit. “From my perspective, he is not welcome here,” Democratic Rep.. “He should not come here while we are in mourning.” O’Rourke echoed her sentiments this week, saying that the president “helped to create what we saw in El Paso on Saturday” and that “he’s helped to produce the suffering that we are experiencing right now. This community needs to heal.
Trump, of course, is constitutionally incapable of letting criticism go—even when it’s coming from a grieving community. Taking a shot at O’Rourke, and suggesting that his grief is some kind of performance to boost his 2020 campaign, is not particularly surprising. It does, however, dispel any doubts about the sincerity of his teleprompter-read words of consolation. He may pay lip service to “unity,” but his instinct for division is reflexive.
