President Donald Trump says he is issuing an executive order to halt flights of the Boeing 737 MAX, seemingly overruling the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration

"We're gonna be issuing an emergency order of prohibition to ground all flights of the 737 MAX 8 and the 737 MAX 9 and planes associated with that line," Trump told reporters in Washington on Wednesday, according to press reports. The groundings by the regulators have represented a dramatic break in ranks with their counterparts at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, which has issued several statements of confidence in the 737 MAX 8 and the larger MAX 9. “This investigation has just begun and to date we have not been provided data to draw any conclusions or take any actions,” the FAA said in an airworthiness notification to airlines Monday.
