But these well-known names do not define the alt-right—they’re merely the most visible part, its most acceptable public face. Beneath them is a whole universe of disaffected edgelords, hiding their anger behind a mask of ironic detachment. The trolls, whose speech is too ugly and violent for Twitter and Facebook, are the ones whose censorship was decried at Trump’s social media summit. They’re part of the family, with some of the same ideas, and some of the same enemies.
