Trump administration says it will move forward with its new family planning overhaul that bars family planning funds to groups that perform or refer women for abortion
The Trump administration this week is beginning to carry out its new federal family planning fund rules — partly achieving Republicans’ long-sought goal of defunding Planned Parenthood.
"While we are incredibly concerned by this harmful rule, our doors are still open," said Planned Parenthood President Leana Wen. "Planned Parenthood will not stop working to block this dangerous and unethical rule that allows the government to censor our doctors and nurses from doing their jobs." The Supreme Court may eventually have the final say on the rules. Nearly 30 years ago, the high court upheld a similar Reagan-era policy, but it was reversed by the Clinton administration before it took effect.
Clinics that remain in the program have until 2020 to comply with another provision of the new rule requiring organizations to have strict financial and physical separation between their abortion providers and other services. Anti-abortion groups who've long lobbied for cutting Planned Parenthood's funding cheered the administration's decision to enforce the rule, predicting that federal courts will side with Trump in the end.
“It’s safe to say that Washington state won’t come into compliance with the rules,” Casey Katims, spokesperson for Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democratic presidential candidate.which are both challenging the rules in court, passed laws this year creating state reserve funds for clinics set to lose money under the new Trump administration rules. Both are traditionally blue states with moderate Republican governors.
