Financial stress caused by eastward referral of patients cited as main reason for potential decision
Hospital directors will gather tonight to discuss suspending women and newborn services at Tri-City Medical Center due to cratered delivery volume.to hospital trustees, administrators state that the Oceanside hospital “now delivers less than one infant per day, on average,” a fact that has caused financial losses that could “negatively impact other critical service lines.”
It’s a fear that was publicly expressed in late March when Dr. Gene Ma, Tri-City’s chief executive officer and a stalwart member of its emergency medicine group, that a shift in delivery referrals by local community clinics to Palomar Health facilities imperiled the department. But that’s not to say that a truly transformative deal is off the table. The memo indicates that the administration is pursuing collaboration with “a variety of potential affiliate partners in search of a collaboration that would not only save but grow this service line.”
