Dr. Gene Ma, who has worked at the hospital for more than two decades, was serving in role on interim basis
Dr. Gene Ma, a specialist in emergency medicine, will serve as Tri-City Medical Center’s permanent chief executive officer.
It is the first time in recent memory that a physician will run the public hospital district serving coastal North County.A graduate of the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, Ma started covering shifts in Tri-City’s emergency department in 2000, becoming its chief medical officer in 2019 and also serving as chief of staff from 2015 to 2017.
“Board members were impressed with Dr. Ma’s longtime commitment to Tri-City as well as his achievements over the past several months of interim leadership,” said board chair Tracy Younger in a statement. Ma called his appointment to the top job at the place where he has worked for more than two decades the honor of his career.
