Traylor Talk: UTSA coach guided by faith through each step
UTSA Coach Jeff Traylor celebrates with the team Friday night, Dec. 2, 2022 at the Alamodome after the Roadrunners beat the North Texas Mean Green 48-27 to win back-to-back C-USA championships. As UTSA coach Jeff Traylor sizes up his goals for the Roadrunners, from the second straight Conference USA championship the program claimed Friday through aims even greater, he often falls back on a familiar refrain.
I was raised in East Texas. My dad was a music director, and my mother played the piano in the church, so we were there Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday nights, revival. We were at church all the time. That’s the way I was raised — Southern Baptist. My wife explained to me how growing up, being raised Jewish, how she was treated and how she was made to feel. So I’ve been very cognizant that what led her to the very faith that I believe in was just people loving her. And showing her to love people unconditionally.
Q: You were raised in the church, but you’ve also mentioned previously that your connection with faith became stronger as you grew older. What led to that evolution? It’s probably pretty typical. I just did what I did because my mom and dad told me to, and then I had Jordan on Oct. 16, 1993. On that spot, I can remember saying to myself, “I am not ready for this. What am I going to do with this human, now? I’m responsible for him, and I have to make some changes.
I worked for a great Christian man at Jacksonville named Danny Long, as well. Colossians 3:23, everything you do, do as if you’re working for the Lord. We lived that at Jacksonville with Coach Long, and we tried to live that at Gilmer, and we try to live that here. Our devotions are optional. We don’t make our kids come to devotion, but I would say 90 percent of our kids attend devotion at the hotel on Friday nights. Our FCA is booming up here, and it’s led by students. I’m out of it.
