C. - The U.S. Department of Transportation will renew its push for freight rail safety as it investigates the cause of a derailment in East Palestine Ohio, that discharged hazardous chemicals into the air, water and ground, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters on Monday.

“We can’t treat these disasters as inevitable or as the cost of doing business,” said Buttigieg, who reiterated his commitment to holding Norfolk Southern responsible for any safety violations that contributed to the derailment and for cleaning up the environmental mess that was created.
