Harris needs 1,976 votes to secure the nomination and seems to be well on her way, according to an updating tally of Democratic delegate support.

The nearly 4,000 delegates who pledged to support President Biden at the Democratic National Convention remained committed to him even as those in his party called for him to step aside. But now that he has decided not to run for reelection, the delegates are free to vote for any candidate.

Many appear poised to back Vice President Harris. Biden endorsed her on Sunday and many party leaders have. The Washington Post is using data from the Associated Press to track how many delegates have pledged to back Harris. She needs 1,976 votes to secure the nomination and seems to be well on her way to gathering the support she needs.

State party chairs have already been holding conference calls and meetings with delegates to gauge support for Harris in an effort to lock up the nomination ahead of the Aug. 19 convention in Chicago. Delegates in more than half a dozen states have unanimously pledged to back Harris, with many more states expected to take similar votes in the coming days.

The rallying behind Harris is for now symbolic, but it signals that she probably will have little problem winning enough delegates when they formally vote next month. Note that this survey of delegates is incomplete and an unofficial tally that will be updated as additional interviews are completed.
