Pixar's Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter defends the existence of the recently-announced Toy Story 5 amongst questions about the sequel's necessity.
Pixar executive Pete Docter defends the existence of Toy Story 5. Released in 2019, Toy Story 4 received much acclaim from critics and audiences alike for what was believed to be the concluding chapter in the animated saga. However, earlier this month, Toy Story 5 was announced to be in development at Pixar, leading many to question if another sequel is necessary after a seemingly perfect ending.
Now, soon after the Toy Story 5 announcement, Docter is defending the existence of another sequel. Talking to The Wrap, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer said that much about Toy Story 5 is still undetermined, meaning it could actually end up surprising audiences by heading in unexpected directions. Read Docter's full comments below:
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The thing we’ve been really trying to do, and this has been the case for a while, is we’ve been looking at them a little bit like, okay, we’re not planning for the future. When we made the first Toy Story, we had no idea there would be a Toy Story 2. We’re just trying to make this movie. But that in making the movie, it takes you places, unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process.
However, the Pixar executive's comments offer a thoughtful defense of why they are moving forward with Toy Story 5. It seems Docter's personal motive for making another sequel is to potentially take the series in a new and unexpected direction, rather than directly trying to create an ending that is better than Toy Story 4's or worse than that, generating profits.
