CEBU CITY — Mayor Gungun Gica of Dumanjug town in Cebu province has issued an apology to residents of his town and hog traders from Negros Island after he decided to roast 80 undocumented hogs for human consumption on Nov. 2.The hogs were found abandoned in Barangay Kanyuko on a pump boat from Negros Island on Oct. 26.
The apology comes in response to public concerns and the backlash on social media, including a Cebuano veterinarian who suggested that the hogs may be positive for the African swine fever or other diseases. The mayor also noted the increasing number of smuggled hogs reportedly brought in from Negros Island to meet the rising demand for cheaper lechon or roasted pig as the holiday season approaches.
In response to the incident, Gica organized a meeting with pig traders from Negros Island to discuss coordinated actions to prevent future cases of illegal hog entry into Cebu.Additionally, he plans to mobilize barangay officials in coastal areas to monitor unauthorized livestock shipments more closely.Concerns over hog smuggling were initially raised by Dr.
