TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Tough measures preventing another epidemic
IN two separate actions earlier this week, the Department of Agriculture and local government officials acting on the DA's advice took harsh measures to fight the spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus, commonly referred to as the bird flu. The DA has been under fire for the past several months for a variety of food supply issues, and anti-bird flu measures have added to those problems by reducing supplies of poultry and eggs.
In the years since, the Asian strain of HPAI H5N1 has been detected among both domestic and wild bird populations in more than 50 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, with occasional cases turning up in humans. The bird flu virus is virtually impossible to eradicate, as it is endemic among wild bird populations and spread over long distances by migratory birds.
