Totally Killer editor Jeremy Cohen discusses the slasher comedy and the key to crafting a good joke and a good scare from the editing chair.
Summary Take a trip back to the '80s with Blumhouse in the search of a masked killer in Totally Killer. Helmed by Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan, the slasher comedy centers on a teenager who accidentally travels back in time following her mother's murder by the local Sweet 16 Killer, landing her during their initial killing spree and giving her a chance to stop them to save her mom in the future.
Now with that established relationship you had with Nahnatchka, and additional development time, did you get the chance to be on set and sort of help block out certain shots with her from an editor's perspective? Now, you mentioned that you were a big fan of horror before coming into this, but you also have that established history in comedy. Did you look to any specific horror films in helping get that grip on when to cut, and when to make the certain edits in the more horror-centric scenes versus the comedy?
Is there any joke or any general sequence you remember from this film being maybe the funniest to help put together from the editing chair? I'm glad that you expanded it to everybody else, because when we see Jamie's mom, it makes it all the more emotional, those stakes for her.
