An open letter doesn’t explicitly call for Joe Biden to step aside but argues the vice president is best positioned to defeat Donald Trump.

But that’s the strong implication from local party leaders. They argue Harris, who started her political career as the top prosecutor in San Francisco, would be best positioned to defeat former President Donald Trump in November. “This election is a fight for our democracy,” the letter states. “With only months until Election Day, we need to have decisive action now in order to build the necessary momentum to win.”
The letter adds to a growing number of Democrats questioning Biden’s chances, coming from one of the country’s most liberal major cities as well as the hometown of former Speakerand California Gov. Gavin Newsom. It illustrates how some factions of the party’s base have grown increasingly anxious over Biden’s sinking standing in public polling. The San Francisco signatories include city Supervisor Matt Dorsey and Bilal Mahmood, a tech entrepreneur and candidate for supervisor.
“It has damaging implications for the House. The top of the ticket affects down-ballot,” Mahmood told POLITICO. “Every week, it looks worse. Every press conference that’s happening, we’re not seeing progress.”
