Tomlinson: Texas PUC must drop half-baked ideas to get plans to fix power grid back on track
“I think this plan is so convoluted and has a long timeline to be put in place, but it’s a setup for failure. It’s not equitable, and I think it’s going to be costly,” Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, said. “The big loser is the consumer, who is having to pay for a market that is uncertain.”
What Texas needs is on-demand power for two-to-four hours, only three or four times a year, when extreme temperatures hit while it’s windless or dark outside. The backup power can come from batteries or quick-fire natural gas powerplants called peakers, which could have prevented the cascade of blackouts seen in 2021.
“I have yet to have a generator come to me and say, ‘If y’all do any of these , I’m absolutely going to go build 10 new peaker plants for the state of Texas,” committee chair Sen. Charles Schwertner, a Republican, said. “Frankly, I don’t see a requirement for new generation.”
