Justin Herbert, prepared well by Chargers coaches, ripped the blitz-happy Vikings D with plenty of help from Keenan Allen

In a game that further showed Justin Herbert is an NFL star, the Vikings nevertheless had a chance to score a winning touchdown in the final half minute only to goof it up, leading to linebacker Kenneth Murray’s interception in the end zone that secured the Chargers’ 28-24 victory in Minneapolis.

“Looking back,” said O’Connell, the former San Diego State quarterback who grew up a Chargers fan in Carlsbad, “I wish I would’ve clocked it and not tried to steal one there.”But that would’ve been the right play — allowing O’Connell and Co. to install up to two more plays and have up to three cracks at the end zone over the final 25-30 seconds.Vikings players appeared casual as the clock ticked toward 30. Then fans’ roars made it tough for Cousins to hear O’Connell.

As a rookie facing Flores’ cagey Dolphins in 2020, Herbert had moments of confusion that produced pivotal failures. Keenan Allen feasted on solo and soft coverage, ending up with 18 catches in 20 targets for 215 yards.Defensively, the Chargers mustered enough pressure without blitzing to keep their erratic pass defense from totally imploding.

Moore’s play design, however, was not impressive. Herbert is good at sneaks, but after taking the snap from under center, he retreated to begin a slow-developing run play by Joshua Kelley.
