A toddler was killed and two adults were seriously injured in a crash Wednesday on eastbound Interstate 80 in Citrus Heights, a suburb of Sacramento, officials said. A driver in a separate vehicle was also seriously injured, the California Highway Patrol said. CHP spokesperson David Martinez said the crash occurred just after 8:30 a.m. at the bottom of the Riverside Avenue onramp. A mother was in a white Volkswagen with her young son and either moving very slowly or fully stopped when a man driving a silver truck ran into her vehicle, he said.
"The driver of the silver truck pickup, he’s on the onramp going onto the freeway, building up speed, as he goes to merge into freeway lane, he hits the white car," Martinez said."You have a car almost at a complete stop, and he’s at freeway speed, so there was a lot of damage to both cars." The child was pronounced dead at the scene; the mother and the male driver were taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Martinez said.
