After a horror-filled night, a boatload of Titanic survivors pulls alongside the liner Carpathia on April 15, 1912. They were among the 600 of the 2,200 on board the sinking Titanic who got into or were pushed into the too-few lifeboats. Another 100 were plucked from the icy water. The rest died, some after heroic refusal to get into the boats.
In 1947, Jackie Robinson, baseball’s first Black major league player of the modern era, made his official debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on opening day at Ebbets Field.
