James Mangold confirms that his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as the iconic musician, is still going forward. Chalamet was first announced to be tackling the role of an early-career Dylan for Mangold back in early 2020, but by October of the same year, the film was reported to be on indefinite hiatus. Since then, Chalamet has only seen his star rise through his appearances in The French Dispatch, Dune, Don’t Look Up and Bones and All.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT But even though Chalamet is a more sought-after star than ever, with Dune: Part Two and Wonka both on his upcoming slate, he is still on-board to play Dylan in A Complete Unknown. In an interview with Collider from Star Wars Celebration, Mangold confirmed that the delayed movie is now back on, and that Chalamet is still set to star, with filming to begin in August.
"[We will likely start filming] August of this year. It's such an amazing time in American culture and the story of Bob, a young 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with $2 in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years first being embraced and kind of into the family of folk music in New York. And then of course, kind of out running them at a certain point as his star rises.
Playing Bob Dylan Could Get Timothée Chalamet An Oscar Nomination When it comes to nabbing Oscars, portraying notable musical figures has been a great play for actors in recent years, with Rami Malek winning Best Actor in 2018 for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, and Renée Zellweger winning Best Actress in 2019 for playing Judy Garland in Judy.
Given Dylan’s stature as an icon of 1960s and 1970s culture, it’s a safe bet that the same people who voted to nominate Butler as Elvis, and to award Malek as Mercury, will happily line up to nominate Chalamet. It helps too that Mangold already knows the drill when it comes to guiding actors to award-caliber musical biopic performances, having directed Joaquin Phoenix to a nomination for playing Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.
