The first film was based on the 2007 of the same name by American author André Aciman; set in Italy in the 1980s, it followed the star-crossed relationship between a 17-year-old Elio Perlman and a visiting 24-year-old scholar , named Oliver. Aciman has since penned a follow-up to the initial book, titled, which the film sequel will likely be based on.
Chalamet earned a Best Actor nod at the Oscars in 2018 for the role, and has expressed a willingness to star in a follow-up.
