While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to comic creator Tim Seeley (HackinTimSeeley) about his PanicInGotham prequel comic Harley Quinn: The Arkham Asylum Files, how it's a crucible for the character, and why Harley is his favorite to write:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Harley Quinn: The Arkham Asylum Files is a prequel to the new augmented reality board game The Arkham Asylum Files: Panic In Gotham City, and it tells the story of how Harley Quinn returned to Arkham not as a patient but as a doctor. In the comic, Harley is on the run from the Gotham Police Department and Batman when she stumbles across an ordinary Gotham citizen contemplating suicide.
They were like, "We really want to get these emotions across." I was like "For a game?" But it was great, because they really knew there stuff. I just thought was so interesting to go into this with like, "We're trying to have a message." I don't play a lot of games. I don't have time, unfortunately. So I just was like, "Well, clearly, things are being done differently in games than I expected.
You said Harley is one of your favorite characters to write. What do you think makes her stand out, especially amongst all the iconic Batman rogues, anti-heroes, and villains? Tim Seeley: It's a tragedy, right? Stories are sort of built around that idea of an arc for a character, but I think they hit harder when the stakes are your life itself; your soul. It's a soul story, right? She's going to get the the taint off her soul. Because she has perpetrated bad things, as we know. And so I think that everyone kind of gets that too. I personally like superheroes because they represent this sort of ideal.
