TikTok is moving forward with its plan to store European user data locally in an effort to assuage concerns about privacy and surveillance.
The Dublin data center is the first of three TikTok plans to build in Europe as part of"," its initiative to create a"specially-reinforced protective environment" for European user data. Two more centers are under construction in Ireland and Norway, slated for completion by the end of 2024. TikTok says all three data centers will only store data from users in the European Economic Area, UK and Switzerland.
The move comes as TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, faces ongoing scrutiny over its ties to China and whether user data could be accessed by the Chinese government. The app has been banned on US government devices while some US states are moving to prohibit its use entirely. The European Commission alsoBy localizing data storage in Europe, TikTok aims to reassure regulators that European user information will not leave the region.
NCC Group will monitor data flows in and out of TikTok's new secure environment to validate that only approved employees can access certain data types. They will perform regular security assessments of TikTok's infrastructure, including its data centers, apps and new security gateways. NCC will also provide real-time monitoring of TikTok's network traffic to identify any unauthorized access attempts.
". Creating separate silos for European and US data is likely part of TikTok's strategy to avoid an outright ban in both regions. But threats still loom. There is no evidence yet that TikTok's latest moves will fully satisfy authorities and critics might argue that as long as TikTok remains under Chinese ownership, concerns will persist since auditors cannot see behind the curtain of the company's internal operations. Still, establishing local data centers is a critical first step.
