This personal essay recounts three impactful experiences in 2024 that helped the author better understand their multifaceted identity. These experiences include the Reischauer Scholars Program, the National Convention for the Japanese American Citizens League, and the Invitation Program for Japanese Americans sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Each program provided unique insights into Japanese history, culture, politics, and the experiences of marginalized communities.
On Aug. 6, 2020, visitors observe a minute of silence for the victims of the atomic bombing, at 8:15 am, the time atomic bomb exploded over the city, at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park during the ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the bombing, in Hiroshima, western Japan. In 2024, the author of the essay visited the place. When I look in the mirror, I sometimes find myself confused by the face staring back at me. Beneath the surface, there are so many faces: Japanese, Korean, American.
The most personal and eye-opening lesson was on the Zainichi Koreans, people of Korean descent living in Japan. My mother’s grandparents immigrated to Japan from Korea during the colonial era and chose to stay in Japan after the war. This was my first structured learning about this community, and it felt deeply personal.
As it was an election year, the convention partnered with OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates and APIAVote to emphasize the importance of the Asian American voice in politics. The highlight was a Presidential Town Hall, where Vice President Kamala Harris represented President Joe Biden. Seeing a woman of Asian descent confidently addressing such a large audience was inspiring. I also had the privilege of hearing other powerful Asian American women, including actress Tamlyn Tomita and U.S.
