Coach Jimbo Fisher believes the battle among Haynes King, Max Johnson and Conner Weigman...

Haynes King, whose 2021 season came to an abrupt end when he broke his leg in Week 2, is trying to recapture Texas A&M’s starting QB job.COLLEGE STATION — Three’s a crowd? No, sir. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher figures it’s more like that silly TV sitcom from his youth: “Three’s Company.”

That’s also why the vigorous competition among returning starter Haynes King, transfer Max Johnson and five-star freshman Conner Weigman is by far the most captivating storyline of spring drills, rolling right into the steam of summertime. The early results, halfway through spring practices? Fisher mostly has good things to say about the gung-ho trio, as you would expect.

The intriguing Johnson, of Athens, Ga., started 12 games last year at LSU, including beating the Aggies in the regular-season finale at Tiger Stadium, before exiting Baton Rouge for College Station after Ed Orgeron stepped down as Tigers coach.
