UPDATE: A week after three commissioners resigned, officials have begun the selection process for three new commissioners of the Citizens Police Oversight Commission. ByClaudiaVargas shows us their new criteria:
“It has become abundantly clear to me that this commission is dysfunctional, toxic and unable to function as needed,” Hossain wrote. “And that is solely due to the behavior of a few commissioners who have created this untenable situation in which we now find ourselves.”
Curtis Jones, Jr., 4th District Councilmember and Majority Leader of Philadelphia City Council, released a statement on the resignations as well, and described the CPOC's commissioner selection process. The Citizens Police Oversight Commission was created in the wake of the George Floyd murder in 2020. The purpose of the commission was to have citizens oversee the Philadelphia police department's actions. After three commissioners recently resigned, one remaining commissioner is revealing other problems that is making it hard for the commission to perform its duties. NBC10's Claudia Vargas has the details.
