Three-alarm fire hits Oakland church
Around 10:45 p.m., Oakland Fire Department dispatchers received word of the blaze as a possible outside fire near the First African Methodist Episcopal Church building at 37th Street and Telegraph Avenue, Oakland Fire Department battalion chief Frank Tijiboy said.
As firefighters arrived at the church, they found heavy smoke rising, and called second and third alarms at 11:06 and 11:25 p.m., Oakland Fire spokesman Michael Hunt said. Around midnight, about sixty firefighters worked to handle the fire from a defensive position, with a trio of ladder trucks positioned to pour large amounts of water on the blaze.
