The fire was caused by a vehicle fuel leak that apparently struck a light or power tool and ignited in flames, according to officials.

But while garage staff were siphoning out gasoline from the fuel tank, the crack had expanded further, causing the gasoline to spill onto the floor and apparently striking a light or power tool that engulfed the vehicle in flames, Kennelly said. The fire was contained by Jersey City firefighters without any further spread. The county lost two vehicles in the fire — a sheriff’s office vehicle and a prosecutor’s office vehicle — but there was no structural damage.
The garage facility will be operational again on Friday after being inspected by a fire consultant, Kennelly said, and the fire alarms and sprinkler systems have also been re-calibrated.
