Organizers said “more or less” than 3,000 marathoners have already been disqualified just years after a similar mass-cheating incident in the same race.
Ten days after the Mexico City Marathon, race officials say they are probing allegations of cheating and “unsportsmanlike” behavior from runners amid concerns that many skipped part of the route or used cars or public transport to finish the race.“More or less” than 3,000 runners have been disqualified, said Kevin Cárdenas, one of the race’s organizers, though he insisted the final count is not yet official. Online bib records showed roughly 30,000 people registered for the 26.
In this year’s race, runners had to pass through checkpoints set up every 5 kilometers, or 3.1 miles, to make sure they completed the full course. One user wrote in Spanish that the Mexico City Marathon was the only one where people could run five kilometers of the race and still get a medal. Others called for the race to ban those who cheated from all future Mexico City Marathons to ensure large-scale cheating wouldn’t happen again.
